The Dixie Blog: The Final Year

Flyers-
It has been my opportunity and pleasure to serve Dixie High School over the past two years with The Dixie Blog. Unfortunately, the time has come and I will be retiring the blog in May of 2013. There are multiple reasons why it is time for the blog to end, but the most immediate reason is the lack of a staff and successor to manage the blog. I am proud of the many accomplishments that have been made by the blog over the past two years and I know that it will have a lasting, if subtle, impact on Dixie history.

I was very pleased with the decision earlier this year to merge the Flyer Flash and The Dixie Blog into one powerful organization. The idea at first seemed strong and powerful, but it is now clear that Dixie High is not yet prepared to make a complete shift from print to internet, and that the rebranding of the Flyer Flash did not do justice to its history. For this reason, the Flyer Flash and The Dixie Blog will separate at the beginning of August 2012. The Flyer Flash will continue in its traditional print format, and The Dixie Blog will dissolve at the end of this year. Through this year, however, the blog will carry content and support the Flyer Flash, but only after it has premiered in its standard print edition. After May of 2013, the Flyer Flash content will be found only in its monthly editions.

The Dixie Blog will remain accessible and online after it is retired in May. When saying it will be "retired" I simply mean that it will no longer be updated, and it will no longer be managed or operated by a Dixie High student. The same will go for the following online organizations that are linked to The Dixie Blog: facebook.com/dixieflyers, facebook.com/dixie100, and twitter.com/dixieflyers. These services will also be retired in the same manner. As blog administrator, the passwords for these sites will not be given out to any other individual, and if a similar blog or organization is to start in the future at Dixie High School, it will not be affiliated with The Dixie Blog that has been in operation during the years of 2010-2013.

I appreciate the support of the many teachers and students at Dixie High. The Dixie Blog has been a powerful tool and has been well-received by many. There is no other blog or service similar to it in Washington County, and I have yet to find anything similar at any high school within Utah or even the nation. I enjoy covering school activities in photographs that are exclusive and will not be found in the yearbook. The blog is a powerful service that I wish to retire appropriately by celebrating Dixie High's current and past accomplishments.

Thank you to the administrators and faculty who have supported the blog and its purpose since its conception, and thank you to the many readers and thousands of hits the blog has received over the past two years.

Sincerely,
Shaun Smith

My Years at Dixie

My Years at Dixie
by Tyler Johnson
Staff Writer, The Dixie Blog

------

From sophomore to senior I have had all of my high school years at Dixie. Though I was hesitant and skeptical at first about Dixie, I later came to realize that it was quite enjoyable. In the beginning it started out as me being unsure about things, but later I realized that everything would turn out just fine.

Sophomore year was kind of new to me for awhile. With a new place and new friends, I was not really used to the school. It took me about a month to get used to being at Dixie. It was a funny sight to see me lost or going to the right class during the wrong period.

I remember several times walking into a classroom and seeing people that I had never seen before, I would then laugh in embarrassment and try to find the right class.

I would get lost in the hallway too. I would think and look around, even stand there until I could remember or got the nerve to ask the office. Even though I would get lost this much, it was fun and kind of like an adventure.

It was also different that year because I had moved here from Georgia during fourth quarter of my freshman year, so I started out not knowing many people.

Junior year had a more familiar feel to it because I knew the the school, teachers, and most importantly, my friends. It was very easy to get from class to class except for the distraction of friends. I would stand and talk until the one minute bell would ring and then I’d barely make it to class. It was fun, though hectic, and kind of an escape from societal norms and the everyday rituals.

Senior Memories

Senior Memories
by Kestra White
Staff Writer, The Dixie Blog

------

Everyone says that time flies by so fast. It turns out they were right. Even though I am a senior I still feel like a sophomore.

The one thing that pops into my head of a memory of my high school years is was watching “Julius Caesar” video projects in Mr. Christensen’s 10th grade English class. Also, turning in a time capsule for another English project, which didn't turn out so well. Another favorite memory of my sophomore year was being in Mr. Myers Spanish 3 class and the strange stories he would tell of his childhood that made the class laugh a lot.

During my Junior year, the thing I can remember the most was the crazy seniors in the journalism class and how I was the only Junior in that class. What made them crazy was that the chief editor Mikayla always seemed to talk about cats or Harry Potter. There were also a few sophomores in that class as well.

Also, what I can remember from that class was at the end of the year playing Uno with a few members of the journalism staff.

El Cheapo

El Cheapo
by Brandy Kraiprai
Staff Writer, The Dixie Blog

------

Cheap is a word that could only describe the amount of money you spent on the El Cheapo dance, but never on how you would describe the experience of this fun-filled night.

El cheapo wasn’t only buzzing with excitement, it was creating memories that would never be forgotten. From the simple coconut bra and hula skirt outfits to the more unique costumes, everyone was ready and set to have a joyous time at the dance with their dates, their friends, or both. “I learned how to shuffle in ten minutes!” Exclaimed Gavin Hall, a junior, as he explained what he liked about the dance.

The decorations were phenomenal, but when it comes down to it, nothing could beat the feel of the atmosphere as all students danced to the music that was provided. “It was nicely decorated.” Maxine Gavin, a Dixie senior, recalled about the dance Saturday night.

Even though it seems like there couldn’t be anything that could make the night more exotic, the refreshments surely made it happen. There were delicious delicacies for everyone to enjoy, ensuring that no one would leave hungry.

Working off the food that most people had before arriving at the dance was a fun workout. It included dancing, walking around the dance to talk to friends, and believe it or not, laughing. Laughing burns quite a lot of calories, which you feel when your stomach starts to cramp up after having an “LOL” moment with your friends and acquaintances.

Although many more things happened both before and after the dance, most can agree that it was outstanding, leaving everyone to one day rejoice about the 2012 El Cheapo dance that left them with a story to tell their children in the future.

Teachers vs Students

Teachers vs Students
by Tyler Johnson
Staff Writer, The Dixie Blog

------

The teacher student basketball game this year was surprisingly better than last year's game. All because it seemed to be more interesting and exciting.

Students from both sides were extremely energetic, even before the game started; students were cheering as both teams were warming up for the game.

You could also hear the students calling out the names of their favorite teachers or students.

It was easy to tell that the teachers as well as the students that were playing were all revved up and ready to play while they were shooting their practice shots before the game had started.

It was very easy to see the determination to win that was in their eyes.
