Dixie High Welcomes Alumni to Centennial Homecoming (Article from KCSG.com)

By Shaun Smith, Contributor
September 15, 2010

(St. George, UT) - After a century of Dixie, students and faculty would like to welcome alumni back to celebrate its centennial year. Many traditions have withstood for decades to be participated in by class after class. This year is no exception, as students participate in not just tradition, but celebration of the past 100 years.

One of the grandest traditions is homecoming week here at Dixie. The executive council has gone all-out this year to recognize not just this year’s students, but past alumni as well. The football game and dance will show how Dixie High has evolved over the past century. Participation is highly encouraged of alumni, to bring back memories from when they attended, and offer the opportunity to celebrate St. George’s first high school.

The homecoming football game is to be held on this coming Friday, September 18th. The football game will highlight past students throughout the game. Giving special recognition to former homecoming kings and queens, passing of the football between former players, and the singing of the school hymn by current and past choir members, are just a few of the items scheduled at the game. Those planning the festivities ensure that this homecoming will be the one of the century. Please note that the football game will cost $5 per ticket for adults.

Another of the highlights of the week is the dance. A special quality to this year’s dance is that alumni are invited, and that the dance is to be held at the Old St. George Academy on Main Street (100 S Main Street). Alumni will gain admittance for free, and refreshments will be offered inside. Memorabilia and special decorations will be featured in the hall to highlight the past 100 years.

Throughout the past century, a compilation of Flyer history continues to make Dixie proud. This is a time to not only celebrate the past 100 years, but look to the future as students will continue to “bleed blue”.

Dixie High School at 100 (Article from The Spectrum of St. George)

By Shaun Smith for The Spectrum
September 3, 2010

ST. GEORGE - It was more than a century ago that the St. George Academy was constructed. The school eventually became known as the Dixie Academy.

Dixie High School is proud to
celebrate 100 years of education
and tradition in the St. George
community.
The academy supported both high school and college students until 1963 when it split to become Dixie State College and Dixie High School.

This year, Dixie High is proud to celebrate its heritage and recognize the thousands of students who have received their education there.

The Dixie spirit has endured many years and changes as the St. George area has grown and adapted over the years. Many families from other local high schools in Southern Utah can trace their roots back to Dixie High School.

With generations of students entering the halls of Dixie over time, this year is a time to celebrate the traditions that have developed, the successes of students and to look to future students who will continue to "bleed blue."

Dixie would like to encourage alumni, as well as the public in certain events, to participate in several upcoming activities throughout the year to celebrate the past century.

The Dixie Academy, when Dixie High
School and Dixie College were one in
the same.
While the following events are subject to change, some examples of activities for alumni taking place include: an alumni bucket run during D Week, a basketball game for alumni and a Centennial dance in May.

Homecoming is approaching and will include a dance on Sept. 18 with alumni in mind.
"We're starting the homecoming dance with a social for all alumni. Music of the decades will also be played," says Ellen Stucki, adviser to the 2010-11 Executive Council at Dixie High. "All alumni are invited from 6 to 8 p.m. that night, to the old academy building at 100 S. Main St., while we play their music. Of course they're welcome to stay longer, but that's when we'll highlight them."

Sporting events at Dixie are also including special recognition for past students. At home football games, alumni will be asked to stand for applause, and several classes will be honored.

During the homecoming game, the school hymn will be sung by former and current choir members, "which we've never done before," said Vice Principal Mike Bair.

If planning to attend any football games, please note that all football games are $5 for adults and $3 for senior citizens.

Check out the new Dixie 100 Blog for upcoming events and announcements. The blog can be accessed from the school homepage at dixiehigh.org, where features will include history from the past 100 years at Dixie High, and select surveys and news to include all Dixie students, no matter what year they graduated.
