ST. GEORGE - It was more than a century ago that the St. George Academy was constructed. The school eventually became known as the Dixie Academy.
Dixie High School is proud to celebrate 100 years of education and tradition in the St. George community. |
The academy supported both high school and college students until 1963 when it split to become Dixie State College and Dixie High School.
This year, Dixie High is proud to celebrate its heritage and recognize the thousands of students who have received their education there.
The Dixie spirit has endured many years and changes as the St. George area has grown and adapted over the years. Many families from other local high schools in Southern Utah can trace their roots back to Dixie High School.
With generations of students entering the halls of Dixie over time, this year is a time to celebrate the traditions that have developed, the successes of students and to look to future students who will continue to "bleed blue."
Dixie would like to encourage alumni, as well as the public in certain events, to participate in several upcoming activities throughout the year to celebrate the past century.

While the following events are subject to change, some examples of activities for alumni taking place include: an alumni bucket run during D Week, a basketball game for alumni and a Centennial dance in May.
Homecoming is approaching and will include a dance on Sept. 18 with alumni in mind.
"We're starting the homecoming dance with a social for all alumni. Music of the decades will also be played," says Ellen Stucki, adviser to the 2010-11 Executive Council at Dixie High. "All alumni are invited from 6 to 8 p.m. that night, to the old academy building at 100 S. Main St., while we play their music. Of course they're welcome to stay longer, but that's when we'll highlight them."
Sporting events at Dixie are also including special recognition for past students. At home football games, alumni will be asked to stand for applause, and several classes will be honored.
During the homecoming game, the school hymn will be sung by former and current choir members, "which we've never done before," said Vice Principal Mike Bair.
If planning to attend any football games, please note that all football games are $5 for adults and $3 for senior citizens.
