What are the Chances?

What are the Chances?

For some people going to college is a dream in itself, and for others playing sports at the collegiate level is a whole other task. The odds of playing sports past high school aren’t as high as some players might think. Then if they are talented enough to get there it may not be as glamorous as the athlete might think. In the end if enough work is put in, anyone can find a place in the college sports world.

For the average athlete there is less than a 10 percent chance that they will be put on the roster of a college team. For Dixie alumnus Creighton Atkin, he is one of the high school players to beat those odds. For Atkin his chances were even lower with about between five and six percent of high school soccer players playing college.

He is currently playing soccer for Erskine college in Due West, South Carolina. “You just have to find a place where you can fit in,” is some advice Atkin gave about trying to find a team to play for at the next level.

When starting to look for a colleges there are some steps that have to be done while in high school so an athlete can become a collegiate athlete. Counselor Mrs. Mitchell says that keeping up on grades is essential in finding a spot on a roster. “Getting a good ACT score and good grades will help, so that the coach won’t have to give as much money to an athlete giving them a better chance of getting on the team.”

Mrs. Mitchell also says the very first step would to be registered with the NCAA. “The athletes need to register with the NCAA clearinghouse, usually in their junior year so colleges can start looking at them.

Being able to fit in with the team might not just be being the best player on the team. There are some major things that can help an athlete find a team. “Having good grades, the way you play your position, and how well you can work with the other players on the team,” are the thing that Atkin says are key into getting recruited.

For some high school athletes they only strive to play for a division one team. This may keep them from getting out of high school athletics and moving on to a higher level. Being narrow mind isn’t a good thing when coming to a look for a school to play for. “Take whatever you can get; don’t only try and find something that might not be realistic for you,” Atkin said lastly.

My Years at Dixie

My Years at Dixie

------

From sophomore to senior I have had all of my high school years at Dixie. Though I was hesitant and skeptical at first about Dixie, I later came to realize that it was quite enjoyable. In the beginning it started out as me being unsure about things, but later I realized that everything would turn out just fine.

Sophomore year was kind of new to me for awhile. With a new place and new friends, I was not really used to the school. It took me about a month to get used to being at Dixie. It was a funny sight to see me lost or going to the right class during the wrong period.

I remember several times walking into a classroom and seeing people that I had never seen before, I would then laugh in embarrassment and try to find the right class.

I would get lost in the hallway too. I would think and look around, even stand there until I could remember or got the nerve to ask the office. Even though I would get lost this much, it was fun and kind of like an adventure.

It was also different that year because I had moved here from Georgia during fourth quarter of my freshman year, so I started out not knowing many people.

Junior year had a more familiar feel to it because I knew the the school, teachers, and most importantly, my friends. It was very easy to get from class to class except for the distraction of friends. I would stand and talk until the one minute bell would ring and then I’d barely make it to class. It was fun, though hectic, and kind of an escape from societal norms and the everyday rituals.

Senior Memories

Senior Memories

Everyone says that time flies by so fast. It turns out they were right. Even though I am a senior I still feel like a sophomore.

The one thing that pops into my head of a memory of my high school years is was watching “Julius Caesar” video projects in Mr. Christensen’s 10th grade English class. Also, turning in a time capsule for another English project, which didn't turn out so well. Another favorite memory of my sophomore year was being in Mr. Myers Spanish 3 class and the strange stories he would tell of his childhood that made the class laugh a lot.

During my Junior year, the thing I can remember the most was the crazy seniors in the journalism class and how I was the only Junior in that class. What made them crazy was that the chief editor Mikayla always seemed to talk about cats or Harry Potter. There were also a few sophomores in that class as well.

Also, what I can remember from that class was at the end of the year playing Uno with a few members of the journalism staff.
