Everyone see’s the performance side of the Jetettes at football and basketball halftimes, but a lot of the time that’s the only side they see. They don’t realize how much really goes into being a Dixie High Jetette.

This could be due to the fact that they practice in the wee hours of the morning when no other students are on campus or even awake. Every single morning, April through June and August through March, the Jetettes are up and at ‘em and dancing in the main gym at six am.

They start out the morning by stretching in lines spread out across the floor, led by two of the officers, jamming out to pump up music. After about ten minutes, they’re all stretched and ready to do kicks.

“Shake it” by Metro Station blares through the speakers and the girls run to their kick line, tallest in the middle and descending height down the line. After a “5-6-7-8” and a slap, they’re kicking away any sense of sleepiness left in them.

After finishing the morning kicks, Mrs. P, the Jetette advisor, starts working through either the routine they’ll be performing that week or polishing their competition dances. They start out by cleaning the dances, which consists of straightening formations, matching arm and leg angles, and counting through the routine.

What are the Chances?

What are the Chances?

For some people going to college is a dream in itself, and for others playing sports at the collegiate level is a whole other task. The odds of playing sports past high school aren’t as high as some players might think. Then if they are talented enough to get there it may not be as glamorous as the athlete might think. In the end if enough work is put in, anyone can find a place in the college sports world.

For the average athlete there is less than a 10 percent chance that they will be put on the roster of a college team. For Dixie alumnus Creighton Atkin, he is one of the high school players to beat those odds. For Atkin his chances were even lower with about between five and six percent of high school soccer players playing college.

He is currently playing soccer for Erskine college in Due West, South Carolina. “You just have to find a place where you can fit in,” is some advice Atkin gave about trying to find a team to play for at the next level.

When starting to look for a colleges there are some steps that have to be done while in high school so an athlete can become a collegiate athlete. Counselor Mrs. Mitchell says that keeping up on grades is essential in finding a spot on a roster. “Getting a good ACT score and good grades will help, so that the coach won’t have to give as much money to an athlete giving them a better chance of getting on the team.”

Mrs. Mitchell also says the very first step would to be registered with the NCAA. “The athletes need to register with the NCAA clearinghouse, usually in their junior year so colleges can start looking at them.

Being able to fit in with the team might not just be being the best player on the team. There are some major things that can help an athlete find a team. “Having good grades, the way you play your position, and how well you can work with the other players on the team,” are the thing that Atkin says are key into getting recruited.

For some high school athletes they only strive to play for a division one team. This may keep them from getting out of high school athletics and moving on to a higher level. Being narrow mind isn’t a good thing when coming to a look for a school to play for. “Take whatever you can get; don’t only try and find something that might not be realistic for you,” Atkin said lastly.

Nobody gave the Dixie Flyers much of a chance against #1 seed Judge Memorial. While the Flyers had to win their final game just to get into the state tournament, Judge had run off an impressive 10-0 record in region 10.

For the first 28 minutes, it seems as if things were going as planned, with Judge Memorial holding a 41-33 lead with just four minutes left in the game. The Flyers were just trying to stay within striking distance, in front of a very tough Bulldog crowd.

Then the unthinkable happened; Dixie went on a 13-0 run to end the game, shocking the top seeded Bulldogs 46-41. Devin Bennett led the way for the Flyers with 16 points, while Walker Swenson and Deshon Brown each chipped in with 10.

Bennett, whose eight consecutive points helped the Flyers tie the game, was thrilled about the victory. “It was a very emotional win for us, especially our seniors. There was no way we wanted that to be our last game, and now we got at least one more.”

The Flyers' win gave region 9 schools a perfect 4-0 record so far in the tourney, which is very exciting, considering the state tournament is at Dixie State College this year. Dixie expects a huge turnout when they face Delta Thursday, February 24th.

“We're very fortunate to have the state tournament right in our own backyard this year,” says Dixie senior Brandon Pledger. “We feel like we really came together as a team against Judge, and the huge fan base is just going to make us that much better.”

The Delta Rabbits stand in the way of a trip to the semifinals for the Flyers. They are set to play Thursday, February 24th at 11 am at the Burns Arena. Everyone come support your Flyers!

Flyer Basketball Recap

Flyer Basketball Recap

Before Friday nights game between the Dixie Flyers and Hurricane Tigers, the Flyers were at the top of the standings and now they’re in the middle of the pack. Just like a basketball game itself, it goes to show how fast things can change on the hardwood.

With Dixie’s 31-39 loss to Hurricane it put them in 4th in the region.

The team has gone through up and downs and are trying to keep their heads up even with all the injuries that have come upon them.

With their 54-51 loss to Cedar the hole keeps getting deeper for their state playoff dreams.
