PINE VIEW - As Justin Cummings dove on the onside kick it was apparent that Dixie had just spoiled Pine View’s homecoming and pulled off a tremendous upset. The Flyers took the lead and almost gave the game away before securing the win.

Pine View’s offensive line showed dominance at the beginning of the game, easily running it up the gut to a seemingly effortless opening drive touchdown. But the Flyers, led by savvy junior quarterback Blake Barney, bounced back with a touchdown of their own.

During the drive, the Flyers leading wide receiver, Tadd Challis, went down on a questionable hit by defensive back Braxton Peterson. Instead, Challis's replacement, sophomore Lukas Hildebrandt, burned the Pine View defense en route to two touchdown receptions and a 21-19 advantage for the Flyers going into halftime.

The second half was much of the same with the Flyers holding a tight lead. Dixie took a 28-19 lead on a 4 yard end around by Lukas Hildebrandt, but Pine View came right back. After intercepting Blake Barney they used the short field to trim the lead to 28-26.

Perhaps the play of the game came when Blake was again intercepted by Peterson, while running it back the ball was jarred loose and jumped on by the Flyers. Dixie then proceeded to go on an eight play, 81 yard scoring drive, capped by Cummings' 22-yard score to take a 35-26 advantage.

After Pine View went three and out, Dixie appeared to have the win secured, simply milking the clock as Flyers fans shouted “it’s all over.” But at the 1 yard line a misread play turned into a 100 yard interception return by Wes Moeai. It was a near disaster ending, but Justin Cummings was able to recover Pine Views onside kick officially ending the rivalry game in favor of Dixie.

Dixie improves to 4-0 on the year and has an epic clash with the Hurricane Tigers tonight. Pine View is now at 2-2 and plays Desert Hills next.
