Principal's Corner: April 29, 2013

The end of the school year is in sight. You can feel it in the air at Dixie High School.  D Week is a sure sign that another senior class will be leaving their mark at our historic school and moving on to accomplish great things. Some of you may even be counting down the last days. I thought of doing that too.

August 15, 2012, the first day of the school year; 180 to go. It made me think about all the things we pack into those 180 days of going to class, going to practice, doing homework, taking tests, planning for dances, hanging out with friends.

I’m sure it must seem like you were sitting every day in Social Studies classes learning about World War II and westward expansion. Actually, it turns out you were really learning that you live in a great country that will require important contributions from you to make it even better. You went to Math class every day and thought you were learning about order of operations and solving for X, but it turns out you were really learning how to think and how to tenaciously solve a problem. You went to Language Arts class and thought you were learning about Shakespeare. Actually, you will find that you learned to think about the great ideas of mankind and how to communicate those ideas to others. You went to practice every day and thought you were learning how to play defense or how to throw a ball. Turns out, you were learning how to commit yourself wholeheartedly to a team effort.

Sometimes you will find yourself in fourth place, only to push ahead and become champions! That’s a lesson worth learning—and one you will be able to use many times in your life. School is like that—it turns out you were learning something important every day.These were not always the lessons you memorized for a test, but they were lessons you will use every day going forward.

Congratulations to all of you who will realize your goal of a high school diploma at the end of this year. Congratulations to all of you who finish these 180 days of the school year and are smarter and better for it. And finally, please remember that we need your best effort until the 180 are done. Work hard these last weeks, prepare for your tests, and finish strong. That’s another lesson worth learning—and another lesson you will be able to use every day going forward.

El Cheapo

What  a night! Our Exec Council never disappoints! All their hard work is always greatly appreciated and everyone always goes home from the dances satisfied with the presentations they put on.

El Cheapo: sounds pretty weird, but it is really unique in how the whole thing works.

If a person gets asked, then they have to pay and plan the entire date. So, because no one wants to do that, everyone tries to ask someone before they get asked themselves.

It is really pretty funny how creative people get. And when I say creative, that means cheaply creative, hence the “cheap” part.

Sometimes people just scribble, “El Cheapo?” with their name on a piece of paper and have someone run it to the person they are asking. Other times people get really crazy on asking like they would in a more formal dance, but that doesn’t happen as often.

El Cheapo is completely different than any other dance of the entire year. Anyone can ask, boy or girl, and students keep everything really inexpensive and easy.

The awesome theme this year was “Jump” but in an exciting 80s rockin’ way.

Students traditionally went to the D.I. to look for clothes from back in the day. Baggy, pegged, and bright colored pants were generally what many of the students found, along with long sweaters or blazers, and lots of big hair, glasses, and bangles.

Everyone seemed to really enjoy dressing up and looked completely like they were from the 80s.

Originally, the dance was supposed to be held at Anti-Gravity in Green Valley, but due to complications, plans changed and we were forced into having the dance in the small gym instead.

Still, everything turned out to be extremely fun for each individual.

“It was so much fun to dress up with my date and the rest of the school; we went completely crazy!” said Sarah Pyper, senior.

As hot as it was in there, the atmosphere was really fun. There were posters of idols like Michael Jackson and pictures of rubik’s cubes all over the walls and crazy music that played all night long.

It’s great when everyone goes all out while dancing and dressing up for dances like this; there seems to be a better mood throughout the room and it creates way more fun than being shy and awkward.

Lots of better memories happen that way. Hopefully if not everyone came to El Cheapo, they will come to our very last dance of the year, D-Day. Come on guys, last one; this is bound to be the best of the best! Even if you don’t have a date, just grab a couple friends and get on over there, you’ll regret it if you don’t!!
