Has anyone noticed the change in the world lately? Almost everything is on the internet instead of paper. The Flyer Flash is a good example of this change going on in the school.

When did the Flyer Flash start and why the change in format? “The Flyer Flash started when the high school and the college separated,” mentioned junior, Shaun Smith.

Every month the Flyer Flash staff writes their own articles and the editors edit them and then it's time to format the paper and send it around the school for students to read. Shaun Smith said with grief that “formatting the paper is so much harder that formatting The Dixie Blog because you have to make your own format to where the blog gives you more freedom and space.”

Why the change to go online? Mr. Christensen said “because it will cost less, it will be up-to-date, and we live in an electronic age so we are bringing the Flyer Flash up to the next century.”

If it's a different format does that mean the Flyer Flash and the blog will have different articles? Christensen said “the articles will continue on the blog.”

The idea for the blog started in August of 2010 for the centennial year and was a way to communicate with Dixie alumni and the community. To get on the blog you just go on the school website and scroll down and there is a picture of Freddy the Flyer. Click on it and there you go, you’re on the blog.

The blog is going to be so different from the traditional print paper. There will be many ways to get the paper on the blog instead of waiting for the Flyer Flash every month. Mr. Christensen listed a few ways of getting the articles you want on the computer. “There are two options, URL or there will be a barcode on the blog and you can scan it with your smart phone.”

Along with so many other things going on at Dixie High School the Flyer Flash is one of the things changing every year. The Dixie Blog is helping make that change.

After being a school for over a hundred years, Dixie has perfected working hard, achieving goals, and being the greatest. Dixie's fame doesn't go unnoticed as it has become the "destination school" for Washington County high school students.


Some students work better with one school better than the other. Students who have come from other schools get a perspective of how each school is different, most of the time. Such as getting along with students or teachers, or a better class or a class that they really want to take but can't take else where. Kylie Hardin, a senior, and former Snow Canyon and Tuachan student likes the tennis team here, "Snow Canyon's tennis team was completely wack and I wanted a better one."


Transportation is another reason that students transfer to a different school. Mostly because they can't afford gas or because it is easier to just go to a school that is closer than other schools. Mrs. Lewis, counselor, says that most kids transfer because of money reasons, "There are times where students transfer because they move and don't have a way to get to their original school or don't have enough money for transportation to still go the other school."

We hear it all the time: “Don’t text and drive.” We know about it  yet some of us still do it. 


In 2009, 5474 people were in fatal car accidents due to distracted driving and an additional 448,000 were injured. 


Cell phone usage only made up 995 fatalities (18% of all distracted driving related crashes). So what made up the other 4479?   


Cell phones, drinking and drug use are all distractions we’ve known about for years. But did you also know that loud music, young passangers, driving while fatugied, and speeding can distract just as much? Just dialing a number on your cellphone can quadruple your chances of getting in a crash.

Flyers Celebrate Huge Upset

Nobody gave the Dixie Flyers much of a chance against #1 seed Judge Memorial. While the Flyers had to win their final game just to get into the state tournament, Judge had run off an impressive 10-0 record in region 10. 

For the first 28 minutes, it seems as if things were going as planned, with Judge Memorial holding a 41-33 lead with just four minutes left in the game. The Flyers were just trying to stay within striking distance, in front of a very tough Bulldog crowd. 

Then the unthinkable happened; Dixie went on a 13-0 run to end the game, shocking the top seeded Bulldogs 46-41. Devin Bennett led the way for the Flyers with 16 points, while Walker Swenson and Deshon Brown each chipped in with 10.

Bennett, whose eight consecutive points helped the Flyers tie the game, was thrilled about the victory. “It was a very emotional win for us, especially our seniors. There was no way we wanted that to be our last game, and now we got at least one more.”

The Flyers' win gave region 9 schools a perfect 4-0 record so far in the tourney, which is very exciting, considering the state tournament is at Dixie State College this year. Dixie expects a huge turnout when they face Delta Thursday, February 24th.

“We're very fortunate to have the state tournament right in our own backyard this year,” says Dixie senior Brandon Pledger. “We feel like we really came together as a team against Judge, and the huge fan base is just going to make us that much better.”

The Delta Rabbits stand in the way of a trip to the semifinals for the Flyers. They are set to play Thursday, February 24th at 11 am at the Burns Arena. Everyone come support your Flyers!

Finding The Message

When a student looks through the halls of Dixie High school, they might not think there is a band with a reason to play music.


As a closer look is taken a person would find the The Message.


The Message is a three piece alternative punk rock band that is always looking to play some music for anyone that will listen.


Their singer and guitar player, junior Garrison Ganowsky loves to put on a good show. “When I get on stage I just let loose and try to put on a show to remember,” Ganowsky said when talking about what he likes do on stage.


The band also consists of bassist, junior Braden Hallman and drummer, junior Hunter Chamberlain.

Something to think about!


Often, as I speak with students in my office concerning issues related to being successful in school, such as tardies, absences, failing grades, truancies and so forth, and then pose the question, “What if this were a job, would you be doing this?” Their answer back is, “Well, I wouldn’t be tardy or absent, or I would try harder if it were a real job. My answer back to them is, “You need to understand that being successful in school and obtaining a high school diploma is your job, and correlates to $1,000s down the road. Failure to earn your diploma now will result in far fewer options for employment, and earnings that are far below those who do graduate from high school, and especially those who go onto post- secondary school or training.” Earning a high school diploma opens the door to a successful future with many more options, and the potential for the quality of life most of us would prefer. 


Referring to a strategy used by Hyrum Smith, the founder of Franklin Planners, it would be in a person’s best interest to look ahead 5-15 years down the road of life, and visualize where they see themselves in terms of circumstances, position, or quality of life. After seeing in one’s mind where they wish or desire to be, refer back to their current status or position in the present time, analyze what current performance is taking place, and predict the likelihood of achieving their future plans or goals based on current behavior, habits and actions. If you can clearly see that what you envision for your future, isn’t likely to become reality based on current choices and behaviors, then change and put your life in line with expectations. A popular adage states, “If you want to keep getting what you’ve been getting, keep doing what you’ve been doing. If you want something different, change!”

My Week Without My Phone

When people say you’d die without a phone, they aren’t kidding. I spent a whole week without my cell and it was torturous! 


The first day was probably the easiest, since I made sure all my friends knew I wasn’t going to have it. I would absently grab for my phone in my pocket, then remember I didn’t have it. 


The next day was terrible. I’d think my phone would vibrate in my pocket, or that I had forgotten something in my friends car, but wouldn’t be able to text her to grab it for me. 


The third and fourth day were the same as the second, but instead of watching tv all day, I’d busy myself with reading or decorating my walls in my bedroom, which are now covered posters and pictures.

When Valentine’s day comes around love is in the air, but so is the hatred for the holiday.

Some people just treat the special occasion as a reason to buy things for their significant other, and others treat February 14th like a regular day.

It seems that the deciding factor whether people like Valentine’s day or not is if they are in a relationship says senior Creighton Atkin, “The people who have a boyfriend or girlfriend like it, and people without one either hate it or just don’t care about it.”

The gifts of stuffed animals, chocolate, balloons, and of course, roses are being passed around. When the question was asked what you would like to receive on Valentine’s day, sophomore Faithe Felt responded, “Money can’t buy love, but it improves your bargaining position.”

Before Friday nights game between the Dixie Flyers and Hurricane Tigers, the Flyers were at the top of the standings and now they’re in the middle of the pack. Just like a basketball game itself, it goes to show how fast things can change on the hardwood.

With Dixie’s 31-39 loss to Hurricane it put them in 4th in the region.

The team has gone through up and downs and are trying to keep their heads up even with all the injuries that have come upon them.


With their 54-51 loss to Cedar the hole keeps getting deeper for their state playoff dreams.

The thought in this day and age with going without a cell phone for a week would be insane to some.

For some people their cell phone is a major part of how they communicate and to keep in touch with others.

When I was given the assignment of going five days with no use of my cell phone I thought that my life wouldn't change very much.
 
As the project was in it’s early stages I realized how much time is actually spent on a cell phone throughout the day.

L.I.A, also known as Latino’s in Action, is a school program that lets high school students help elementary children that have a hard time learning because they don’t understand English very well.

The Dixie High students have the honor of working with East Elementary, teaching the kids how to read, write, and play games that will enhance their English. The program is intended to make both the tutor and student have a better future, increasing both of their chances of having a better life. Studies have shown that if you have a better reading grade, you’ll understand the work you’re given, which makes a huge difference in how you’ll do in high school.

The way Mr. Myers accepted students in the program was tiring and a very long process. “The guidelines to get accepted into the program are based on attendance and GPA. 

Principal Bergesen, Mr. Simmons (counseling office) and myself looked at and reviewed on several occasions the applications and the qualifications of each applicant.  We looked up historical grades, and attendance. More emphasis was placed on how they are doing now in school. I am not sure how many people applied.  I do know that there were a lot. There are 28 students in the class at this time.”

Colleges are more likely to accept students who can speak more than one language so that they can communicate with a bigger variety of people in the business world, which is why Dixie students involved in the program would be helping both themselves and the children, giving them a better chance at getting more colleges.

Realizing you’re addicted to something is always hard.


Being without a cell phone for a week made me realize that I was addicted to it.   


We live in a day and age where almost everybody has a cell phone. It’s easy to get a hold of people, we can access the Internet on it, listen to our favorite music, and even play games.


I bet everybody reading this right now has thought at one point, “Oh sure, I can go without a cell phone for a week no problem.” Most of you are probably wrong. It’s easy for the first day or two, and sometimes even three. But not for 5! Here’s my little journal I kept over the last 5 days.
