Senior Show-Off

Senior Show-Off
by Sara Jewkes
Staff Writer, The Dixie Blog

------

Senior Showoff is a big tradition at Dixie High and every year there are different talents that are shown. Senior, Christine Cox said, “There’s a variety of performances this year”.

So many different performances happened this year from piano playing to singing and the well known black light ASL performance. Senior, Tim Mendez, said his favorite part of the senior showoff was “Dylan Cluff and his amazing singing skills.”

Dylan Cluff was just one of the several singers that performed throughout the show. Zach Adair, a senior, said “I loved the Burninators!”.

A favorite of senior, Christine Cox was ,“Malory’s [Brown] hymn at the end [How Great Thou Art]”.

If a student is a senior it can be very emotional to be in the senior showoff. Tim Mendez mentioned, “Singing the school hymn at the end was really sad because it made me realize school is almost over and we’ve been through so much together”.

Zach Adair said, “The hymn was sick! Seeing everyone cry made it so awesome”.

There are so many different things that happened during the Senior Showoff and as a senior it was even better.

This is one of the last activities the seniors get to do together and this year was one of the best!

Great job to all that were involved with the Senior Showoff.

D Week

D Week

------

D Week was a whole new experience for the sophomores and any other new students at Dixie High.

As a new freshman last year I had no idea what D Week even was. Especially being from Snow Canyon and all. It didn’t seem like a big deal to me.

Going all through school this year and hearing people talk about how they couldn’t wait for D-week and how it was their favorite week of the whole year, I started to rethink my previous ideas.

The first day of jello wrestling seemed weird to me. Why would anybody want to go out in this hot weather and wrestle in a bunch of jello with other students and dye their skin blue? At first it was the stupidest thing I’d ever heard. But when watching this, I couldn’t help but laugh and enjoy watching my fellow Flyers do just what I was questioning.

Not all the fun ended on Monday though, Tuesday was just as great, if not better. It was Night on Broadway. It was so much fun to sit in the packed audience and watch the drama kids give one last performance of the year. The mashup of a variety of the different broadway plays blew my mind.

When Wednesday rolled around for the Student Breakfast and Mr. Dixie pageant. I was stoked. Hearing about all of this on the announcements the past few weeks got me excited to see what would be coming up. Boys? In a pageant? Yeah right!? Are the teachers really serving us breakfast? No way!

I thought the pageant was great and congrats to our Mr. Dixie! And teachers, the breakfast was delish!

Class Olympics

Class Olympics
by Heidi Harris

Most years the seniors usually win the wonderful D-Week tradition of the different classes competing in a menagerie of events called the Class Olympics. Two thousand twelve was no different.

Each class had a variety of different boys and girls competing in each event. The events included the 8 X 100 relay, the baseball/softball throw, the root beer chug, the tennis volley, three-legged race, soccer shootoutt, car push, football throw, heavy jump rope, bench press, and tug-a-war.

The sophomores came out of the gates on fire leading after the first few event up until the football throw when the seniors took over and were ahead by almost ten points and never looked back. The juniors tried to keep pace finally overtaking the sophomores in the final events.

The crowd of students and teachers were really into cheering for their class to win especially when it came to the root beer chug. “Chug! Chug!” could be heard all around.

On car pushing the crowd got riled up again, making the boys more motivated as they went around the track for each class. Football throw is where the seniors really pushed to get the best score.

Weight lifting, was another one where the crowd got close and really cheered for their classmates.

Great weather, great music and great times made the 2012 Class Olympics a success once again.

Mr. Dixie

Mr. Dixie

------

This year’s Mr. Dixie Pageant was a new and fresh experience that was fun and interesting.

The pageant was a perfect way to reveal some of the traditions in D-Week here at Dixie.

It was just what the students here needed to revamp their year, though there may not be much school left. But it really hit home with the student council trying to make life here at Dixie an exciting environment for the end of the year.

The staff and the Exec Council here at Dixie work extremely hard to make sure the students have a fun school year while throwing in some of the great traditional activities.

They went through a lot of planning to make this activity and tradition a great experience this year.

The pageant was interesting and the contestants seemed to be enjoying themselves as well as all of the students in the crowd.

There was a great amount of participation from the crowd as well. They cheered, clapped, and yelled for the seniors on the stage.

When interviewing current Dixie teacher Mrs. Stucki about what the Mr. Dixie’s point was she answered, “It’s just a fun activity for the boys to do during D-Week, there was a point where we did not do it but we have brought it back recently in the past few years.”

It seemed that many enjoyed it this year and that is why Dixie will continue this tradition.

When asked what she thought of it and what she would change, senior Kelcie Leavitt replied, “I love it, I think it is a really fun tradition and I recommend future generations to be original but stick to the tradition.”

This just goes to show that Dixie will continue to maintain and create strong traditions for the students here.

Boys Soccer

Boys Soccer
by Samantha Aldrich

------

This year’s boy’s soccer team is doing well so far, with a record of 8-0 in region and ranked second in the state for 3A. Dixie’s staff and student body are hoping their winning streak will keep up.

Surely many are wondering how this season so far has stuck in the minds of some of the players. “We’ve played really well and hope to do so entering the second half of the year,” said junior keeper, Tristan Cowles.

With a lot of seniors on the team this year, Dixie’s hoping to get some good players for the upcoming years. “We hope to play in Rio Tinto this year and get a ring, and get the younger ready for next year.” explains senior Sam Hall when speaking of where the Sandy location where the championships are played.

While the soccer ball is being kicked around the field, the fans and the crowd’s cheering for Dixie High has been crazy. People screaming, yelling at the referees when they don’t make a good call, and the fanatics caring and supporting Dixie.

These players sure do love their fans. “If they weren’t there it would be fun to play but not as fun. I love soccer!” exclaims senior Carlos Martinez.

These dedicated, hard working, and skilled players pour out their guts and sweat every day on the field to leave their mark in Dixie High’s book.

Having to play six more games will mean a soon end to the unity of the team. But with half the season still to play, this year’s team still has a lot to prove on the pitch.

The Flyers can’t wait to see what’s in store! Good luck boys!

Flyer Party Sweeps

Flyer Party Sweeps

When class elections come to mind people think of passing out candy, putting up posters, and candidates trying to buy last minute votes.

In Dixie there is a long tradition of the Flyer Party and the Dixie Party going at it to see who can get elected into office.

This year it was the Flyers party that was able to run the table and get everyone of their candidates elected.

Some students might not know that you don’t have to vote for everyone in the same party and that’s what the head of student elections, Ms. Stucki said was the biggest disadvantage to having the parties.

She also went on to say that she thinks the parties are how the elections should be done. “I believe the parties are fair and we keep them going because of their tradition.”

Junior Tanner Hafen was chosen to be Student Body President for the 2012-2013 school year and he is currently the junior class president.

When he was asked he was going to do as student body president he replied “ I want to get recognition to the clubs that might not get as much recognition right now.”

Restitution is NEVER Fun

Restitution is NEVER Fun
by Brandy Kraiprai
Staff Writer, The Dixie Blog

------

I love going to school on Saturdays, waking up extra early, spending money on something that’s normally free, and hanging out with people I don’t really wanna be around at 8am in the morning! Did you really think I was serious? I’m kidding, I would never love any of those things, which is why I don’t like restitution; it’s all those things and more.

Who likes to spend ten dollars for two hours of extra schooling, which isn’t even going in as extra credit? Not me. Honestly, restitution isn’t fun even when you get it with your best friend.  “It doesn’t benefit you in school. All you do is sit around...” Alexandra Telford, a junior, expressed about her feelings on restitution.

Saturdays should be spent in the sun, hiking, shopping, or even just being lazy at home. When you’re in restitution, there’s never anything to do besides homework or sudoku, but trust me; doing sudoku for two hours gets exhausting.

Junior Prom

Junior Prom
by Tyler Johnson
Staff Writer, The Dixie Blog

------

This years junior prom was a blast, the atmosphere was kicked up and the music was loud. It seemed that the student body was also pumped up; the couples seemed to be in a loss of time as they danced, and even the school staff seemed to be enjoying themselves immensely.

This year’s dance was great and maybe even better than before. Many students seemed to enjoy hanging out, dancing on the floor, drinking & eating, walking around outside or even dancing in the water fountain.

Dixie Junior Marrissa Desmazes said that the atmosphere made the dance great, “The atmosphere alone was fun.”

The staff interacted with the students and some even brought their family along. Current Dixie senior Taschia Ritter said she it was actually kind of fun to have teachers there, “It wasn’t odd or anything, they are always there and i feel it is kind of nice.”

The families seemed to enjoy it as well, like Mr. Dickson and his family. “My daughter enjoyed the dance and so did I, even though she did not get there until 10:30, the end of the dance.”

Though the atmosphere was filled with happiness, the best part would have to have been the few couples dancing outside in the park or in the water. It was entrancingly romantic to watch as couples walked and pranced around the Town Square park next to the St. George leisure building, laughing and smiling, dancing in the fountain, and just enjoying and losing themselves in the moment.

Current dixie Junior Ali Judd stated that, “I thought it was fine, and really fun.” She said she wouldn’t have chance anything.

Battle of the Bands

When the Dixie battle of the bands was all said and done, Verona was crowned the winner of the event. The other three bands that performed weren’t too shabby either.

The contest was held at the GoGo37, which is on the corner of St. George Boulevard and Main street.

The band to take the stage first was Queens Anne’s Revenge. The Classic Rock band played two covers, one by Slash and the other by Joan Jett along with one of their own songs.

The group features junior Bryce Webster on guitar who said he was pumped to play in front of his fellow students. “ I was really hyped to get on stage and play for everyone.”

Next the band that had formed just weeks prior to them playing on stage was Logical Fallacies. The Indie Rock band put together their own versions of “What I’ve Done” by Linkin Park and “Come Sail Away” by Styx. The group also performed a song they wrote themselves.

Easter
by Samantha Aldrich

With everybody anticipating the long awaited Easter break, some don’t even really know what Easter means. It’s all about the break for part of Dixie High’s student body and staff while much of world celebrates the religious holiday.

Easter is the day where most of the U.S. and world wake up in the morning to an Easter basket lying outside their door or even in some cases hidden in the house where the person has to find it if they want it.

This is the day where Easter egg hunts are performed and it’s the traditional act to eat candy.

But why is this day here and what does it mean? What does the Easter bunny represent? This article is here to answer these questions.

Junior Week

Junior Week
by Brandy Kraiprai
Staff Writer, The Dixie Blog

------

Not everything has to be about seniors just because it’s their final school year. For the juniors it was extremely exciting to have a week all for themselves, which also means it has to be the best.

Who doesn’t like to start the week with something sweet and minty? Juniors received Junior Mints on Monday, which was the start to a wonderful week.

The next day there wasn’t a need to assemble an outfit because it was pajama day, but that didn’t mean they got to sleep in class, it just meant they were able to be comfortable and not take time to do their hair. “Pajama day is the best because I love pajamas!” laughed Kelsi Hall, a junior.

Lunch on Wednesday at Iceberg was where juniors were let out early for lunch, allowing them to go to eat longer and get a head start on getting in line at Iceberg and enjoy the delectable food sooner than the upper or lower classmen.
